The continuing nurse education (CNE) program
The Department of Health provides funds for the CNE program. Bendigo Health’s Collaborative Health Education and Research Centre (CHERC) co-ordinates the Loddon Mallee region’s CNE program excluding Mildura Base Hospital.
The CNE program provides acute education at no cost for nurses working in participating health services. Click here for a list of the participating health services and contact information. Other nurses and non-nurses are welcome to participate in CNE events but in accordance with the funding guidelines, they can and in most cases, will be charged a nominal fee.
A core topic curriculum is set every three years. Below is a list of the core CNE topics for the July 2008 until June 2011 funding period.
The CNE topics include:
- Advanced life support (ALS) education
- Advanced life support education package
- Advanced life support (ALS) workplace assessor program
- Basic ECG interpretation
- Advanced ECG interpretation
- Patient Assessment Skills
- Patient Assessment: the deteriorating patient
- Patient Assessment: the inpatient with impaired skin integrity
- Falls: symptom or outcome?
- Quality Use of Medications
- Communication, documentation & nurse accountability
The core CNE topics offered online:

- IV cannulation
- Safe medication management
- Basic life support
All CNE study days are awarded continuing nurse education points as part of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia Life Long Learning Program (3LP). All core nursing education is displayed on the continuing nurse education calendar.
