Patients scheduled to undergo elective surgery may be required to attend a pre-admission clinic in order to ensure they are well prepared for the surgery.
The pre admission clinics are provided to help the patient:
- Get well enough for surgery
- Prepare for admission to hospital
- Understand and prepare for their operation and recovery phase
- Determine any special needs to ensure a smooth and timely discharge home after surgery
- Answer any questions
This appointment may take up to two hours so the patient can be seen by a doctor and have any necessary tests done, such as blood tests, X-rays, ECG etc. Sometimes you may require a second appointment may be necessary.
Not every elective surgical patient needs to attend a pre-admission clinic. Intending patients will be required to complete a medical questionnaire. Based on this information and other criteria the treating doctor will decide if the patient needs to attend pre-admission clinic.
At the appointment, a doctor and/or an anaesthetist as well as nursing staff will see the patient. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists are also available if required.
