Located on the third floor of the Hyett wing, the Surgical Unit specialises in a range of surgical conditions including pre and post operative care of patients undergoing surgery.
The Surgical Unit specialties include minor and major abdominal, ear, nose and throat (ENT), head and neck, facio-maxillary, urology, vascular, reconstructive and thoracic surgery.
A Complex Care room was commenced on the Surgical Unit in March 2008 to provide close monitoring and specialised care for patients with high clinical needs. Up to three patients are housed in the room with a dedicated, experienced surgical nurse assigned to their care. This initiative has optimised the care we are able to provide for acutely ill patients and has reduced the demand for high dependency beds in the Critical Care Unit.
Since May 2008 a 23 Hour Room has been operating within the Surgical Unit. This is a pilot project for regional Victoria aimed at accommodating extended day surgery patients, reducing waiting lists and reducing the need for cancellation of surgery due to bed availability. Patients admitted to the 23 Hour Room have undergone minor surgery requiring an overnight stay in hospital, but are suitable for discharge less than twenty four hours after surgery.
The multi-skilled team of health care professionals of the Surgical Unit aim for the best patient outcomes and a smooth transition from hospital to home, through our close links with community services and other care providers.
The Surgical Unit is committed to providing a positive learning environment for nursing, medical and allied health professionals.
