Glossary of Speech Pathology terms

 

  • Allied Health = physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, dietitian, social worker, pharmacist

  • Comprehension = Understanding (of spoken or written information)

  • Complex communication needs = when gesturing, speech or written communication is inadequate to meet all of their communication needs.

  • Dysphagia = Difficulty swallowing

  • Dysarthria = Difficulty articulating words due to paralysis, inco ordination, weakness or spasticity of the muscles used for speech

  • Dysphasia = A language impairment which can affect expression and/or comprehension

  • Dysphonia = Difficulty making voice

  • Dyspraxia = (speech or oro-motor) . A speech impairment caused by damage to the speech control centres of the brain that are used for planning, forming and sequencing sounds and words into speech. 

  • Expression = a way of communicating to others either by speech, writing, signs, or gestures.

  • Health professional = nurse, doctor, member of an allied health team

  • Laryngectomy = the removal of the larynx or voice box

  • Parkinson's Disease = a degenerative disorder that effects movement

  • Progressive Neurological Disorders = A continuous break down of the central nervous system including the brain and all of its functions, e.g. MS, Huntington's Disease, Motor Neuron Disease, Parkinson's Disease

  • Tracheostomy = a surgical procedure on the neck to open a direct airway through a hole in the trachea (the windpipe)

  • Videofluoroscopy = x-ray of swallowing
